Reviewer Guidance

At the BRJP we are committed to furthering the field of EAP through rigourous research, thoughtscholarship and conversation while upholding the BALEAP values of collaboration, development, inclusivity and professionalism.  We believe that an open peer review process is fundamental in achieving this. Submissions to the journal are assigned two reviewers. It is the journal’s policy for the identities of both the authors and the reviewers to be known. This enables dialogue on the review of the paper, in both directions.

This guidance a work in progress, please send thoughts, suggestions, questions to the the Editorial Board.

Once the journal receives a submission, it will assign two reviewers to work with the author(s).

Reviewer Guidance:

First read through the paper

Consider:

  • Does the submission meet the aims of the journal?
  • Has the submission made the right genre choice?

In-text comments:

Keep in mind that the identities of the author(s) and the reviewers are known. Give critical and constructive comments in a manner you would be happy to receive yourself.

Add in-text comments to the manuscript as you can return this to the author(s).

Consider:

  • The contribution the paper makes to field
  • The impact of the paper on the reader
  • Is there any literature missing?
  • Are references consistent in style?

Dialogue:

Contact the second reviewer to discuss the submission. What can you offer the author(s) in terms of continued dialogue to get the submission ready for publication?

Upload feedback to the journal and arrange any further contact with the author(s)/ highlight how the author(s) can contact you.

Feedback:

This can be added to the journal workflow.

Consider:

  • The contribution the submission makes to the field
  • How the submission contributes to the conversation around its focus
  • What would improve the submission in terms of quality and readability
  • Address any uncertainty about permissions and ethics
  • Let the author(s) know how they can continue the dialogue with you
